STEVE wandered back toward the trailer, a little before dusk, dreaming of fish and Gloria, and happy in the thought that he might be able to persuade her to come out with him tomorrow.

But how would he explain her presence to Bill?

He shrank from explaining anything to Bill. Well, postpone the fishing, then. A man couldn’t fish all the time.

Maybe they could go swimming together. Give her a bathing suit so that she, er, wouldn’t be, um—

He quickened his steps. Wonder how she’d like the record-breaking big-mouth he was bringing home. That ought to fetch her, more than any words from him. There was a delicacy, a subtlety, a dainty persuasive quality about a good fresh bass that beat all the poetry in the world.

That is, around mealtime. Time for poetry after.

He was proud of himself for staying away all day. Tact, that was. Showed her that he wanted her to go right ahead and be at home, feel natural, take it easy. It proved he trusted her too.

Whistling gaily, Steve crossed the point. He could see the trailer now, glistening under the giant trees, and looking for all the world like a home fit for a king.

A king on wheels.

That’s me—king on wheels. Why not make a song about that? Come to think of it, he’d been going to tinker with some music on this trip. Lemme see . . .
